I saw in the visions of my head while on my bed, and there was a watcher, a holy one, coming down from heaven.
Daniel 4:13 (NKJ)
This page shows the development of the Watchers Coins. I used the software called Blender, which is free, to create these tokens. It is an ongoing project of mine and I have used my knowledge of art and my passion for God to produce them. Each decade starting from 1960, the year I was born, has a different theme. From 1960 to 1970 it is the crown of thorns. It represents the sacrifice of Jesus. Because it comes from a plant, I have used a different plant for each month.
The image of the woman above is my wife.
OLIVES
The olive tree is a very popular tree in the Bible. Its oil was used for anointing in the Old Testament and Jesus often used it symbolically to describe his chosen people in the New Testament.
PEARS
The pear is often a symbol of inner peace
FIGS
The fig tree is used as a symbol in the parables of Jesus. One meaning is to show that the kingdom of God is near. He also cursed a fig tree that withered and die because it bore no fruit.
GRAPES
Grapes are used throughout to the Bible. They are used for food, drink and as a symbol.
WALNUTS
Because of its shape and resemblance to the brain, the walnut is symbolic of discernment and wisdom.
APPLES
The apple is often portrayed as the forbidden fruit that Adam and Eve ate in the Garden of Eden. The actual fruit that they ate is not mentioned in the Bible but many paintings and sculptures use the apple as a symbol.
STRAWBERRIES
I spent my infant years in Tiptree, Essex. Tiptree is famous for its jams. We had a strawberry patch in our garden and the strawberry reminds me of those years.
BLACKBERRIES
Blackberries were very popular where I live in a village called Tiptree. It reminds me of my childhood day. Me and my brothers often picked and ate them as they grew wild.
CHERRIES
Though the cherry is not mentioned in the Bible, it is symbolic of beauty, good fortune and abundance.
POMEGRANATES
The hems of the Jewish priests vestments, in the Old Testament, were decorated with the pomegranate seed and is a metaphor for the richness of the promised land of Israel.
ACORNS
The acorn is the fruit of the oak tree and I associate the oak tree with the country in which I grew up in, England.
HOLLY
I associate the holly with Christmas and Christmas with the birth of Jesus. I am aware that Jesus was not born on that date, however, it shows that he existed.
The theme for this Watcher Coin is Israel. I have used the six pointed David star to represent this. There are twelve stars to represent the 12 tribes of Israel.
ALEF BEIT
I have used the first two symbols of the Hebrew Alphabet to represent the Hebrew language.
MENORAH
There are two types of menorah's, one with 7 candelabrum and the other with 9. The 7 branches menorah was used in the Tabernacle during the days of Moses. The 9 branches menorah commemorates the miracle when a days worth of oil lasted 8 days.
AARONS BREASTPLATE - ARK OF THE COVENANT
Aaron the high priest wore a breastplate with 12 precious stones on it. Each stone represented one of the 12 tribes of Israel. The other symbol is the Ark of the Covenant which was the mercy seat of God and was placed in the Holy of Holies in the Tabernacle.
TEN COMMANDMENTS - TANAKH
The 10 commandments are on the left. They are actually written on the coin. On the right is a symbol of the Jewish scriptures.
SHOFAR - HARP
The shofar on the left is an ancient Jewish instrument, usually used in Jewish customs. On the right is harp, symbolic of the one used by David when Saul was king. God plagued king Saul with an evil spirit because of his behaviour. When David played the harp, it had a calming affect on Saul.
LAMB - GOAT
The lamb and the goat were often used as sacrifices during the Jewish rituals. For example, on one occasion, 2 kid goats were used, one for a burnt offering and the other to bear the sins of the nation. The priest would place his hand on it and the sins of the nation would enter it. It was then released into the wilderness. This is where the expression, scapegoat came from. God used lambs blood over the doors of the Hebrews to protect them when the angel of death passed over the land.
This token covers the decade of the 1980's. The rainbow is a sign of God's covenant with the human race. There are two seals, one either side of the rainbow, and these symbolises the Old and New Testament.
THE FISH AND BELL
The bell represents the church since many churches once used the bell to alert people that the church was open for service. The fish is a symbol in the Bible to represent souls of men and women.
THE TALENT AND THE PEARL
The talent, a currency in the Bible, and the pearl are used in the parables of Jesus to explain things in the kingdom of God.
THE LOCUST AND WILD HONEY
These symbols are used to symbolise John the Baptist in the Bible. His diet was locusts and wild honey.
PRAYER AND THE DOVE
Jesus often prayed and his followers are encouraged to pray. The white dove is symbolic of the Holy Spirit.
THE PALM LEAF AND THE CROSS
The palm branches were waved by people as Jesus entered Jerusalem. The Roman Catholics call this celebration Palm Sunday and is a week before Easter. The cross represents the Crucifixion and Jesus is not shown on the cross because he is risen.
THE KEYBOARD AND GUITAR
I used these symbol to represent praise and worship, that is singing and playing musical instruments to honour God, in the modern church.
I have used the crowns of the king and queen to symbolise authority and power. This is often mentioned in the Bible and it is held by priests and well as kings and queens. These tokens cover the period of the 1990's. It is partly done because I am trying to build to entire picture gradually.
THE PRIEST AND HIGH PRIEST OF MOSES
In the days of Moses, God appointed the High Priest and priests to carry out His work. Only they could carry the Ark of the Covenant and perform ceremonies to cleanse the people of sin each year. so their head gear may look like the ones on the token. The priest on the left and the High Priest turban on the right.
THE POPE OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH
The Pope, the head of the Catholic church, had in the past wore a three tier crown. It was a symbol of his power and authority over the Catholic church. I have also included a white skullcap which is also a symbol of his authority. I used my artistic licence to create the crown, so it does not refer to any particular Pope.
ECUMENICAL PATRIARCH AND THE PRIEST OF THE ORTHODOX CHURCH
The head of the Orthodox church is called the Ecumenical Patriarch. His bishops crown or mitre is on the right and the headdress worn by the priest, called a Kamilavka (there are other variations), is on the left. I have used my artistic licence to design them.
THE JUDGE AND SAMSONS HAIR
The first leaders that were appointed when the Jewish nation entered the promised land were called judges. One of them was Samson, who was a Nazarene who had not cut his hair since birth. His anointing was in his hair which gave him great strength. I used the wig of judge on the left and and an illustration of what Samson's hair might look like, on the right.
THE CARDINAL AND THE BISHOP
The cardinal is represented on the left and the headdress of the bishop is on the right.
THE LAURAL AND CROWN OF THORNS
When Jesus was crucified, the Romans had power and authority over the land. I used his symbol, the laural, to represent the Roman governor at the time, Pontius Pilate, who sentenced Jesus to death. The crown of thorns is on the right to represent Jesus, who was mockingly called the king of the Jews.
